The Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center Special Interest Groups: November 16

The Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center is seeking Flagship students and alumni to join Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to provide ongoing student and alumni input and direction on Tech Center initiatives. The Tech Center currently has openings in two SIGs:

Culture Special Interest Group

The Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center is seeking Flagship students and alumni interested in the topic of culture to join the Culture Special Interest Group (SIG). The Culture SIG is a special interest group in the Tech Center’s Student Advisory Board.

The Student Advisory Board (SAB) was formed after the 2018 Flagship Student Hackathon, in order to provide ongoing student and alumni input and direction to the Tech Center. A number of Special Interest Groups have formed around Tech Center initiatives. The Culture SIG brings Flagship students and alumni together to find ways for technology to support the learning and teaching of cultures associated with Flagship target languages. Some initiatives that are currently under consideration include designing discussion sessions based on the scenarios from Culture TIPS (Teaching Intercultural Proficiency through Scenarios) or Culture APP housed in the Tech Center, producing brief podcasts to share cultural reflections about Study Abroad/Capstone experiences, and hosting virtual movie nights to screen target language films.  The Culture TIPS app, which is currently available in Chinese, Russian, and Arabic (with modules in Portuguese in development), presents learners with scenarios and lets them compare their judgements with expert speakers of the target language.

The Culture SIG will be meeting once a month; the next meeting is Friday, November 20 at 3:00 pm HST. If you’d like to join the Culture SIG, or if you’d like more information, please respond to this short questionnaire.

Tutoring Special Interest Group

The Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center is seeking Flagship students and alumni interested in the topic of language tutoring to join the Tutoring Special Interest Group (SIG). The Tutoring SIG is a special interest group in the Tech Center’s Student Advisory Board.

The Student Advisory Board (SAB) was formed after the 2018 Flagship Student Hackathon, in order to provide ongoing student and alumni input and direction to the Tech Center. A number of Special Interest Groups have formed around Tech Center initiatives. The Tutoring SIG brings Flagship students and alumni together to find ways for technology to support tutoring practices, including pathways for tutor networking and materials sharing, pathways to assist active learners, including learner self-assessment and progress tracking, as well as other technology-based supports for tutoring programs. We’ll be meeting twice a month to share questions, insights, and experiences on this topic. If you’d like more information, please respond to this short questionnaire.
