ROTC-Language Flagship Scholarships
Contracted ROTC cadets who are UW-Madison Russian Flagship students in good standing are eligible for ROTC Language Flagship scholarships that fully fund the following Russian Flagship Program activities:
- Russian Overseas Flagship capstone program at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, administered by American Councils for International Education (awards are made in two installments, one for the fall and one for the spring semester).
- Summer Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, administered by American Councils.
- Intensive summer Russian at UW-Madison.
The amount of ROTC Language Flagship scholarships for overseas study is based on the total cost of attendance for participation in those programs. The total cost of attendance, set by UW-Madison International Academic Programs, includes the program fee due to American Councils, as well as estimated additional expenses such as health insurance, local transportation, meals not covered by the program fee, and books and supplies. More on the cost of study abroad.
Russian Flagship students who are contracted ROTC cadets should apply online by the annual application deadline, January 20. ROTC cadets applying for Language Flagship scholarships must also request a letter from their ROTC unit's commanding officer, which confirms the student's ROTC scholarship status and includes the following information: the student's name, field of study, type of ROTC scholarship, the semester the scholarship went into effect, and the expected length of the scholarship. Please do not submit a copy of the contract itself.
Student Certification System Requirement
Students applying for Language Flagship Scholarships are required to complete (or update) a profile in the Student Certification System (SCS), a database managed by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) in the U.S. Department of Defense, which funds the Russian Flagship Program at UW-Madison. NSEP uses the SCS to track student enrollments and determine the amount of funding, including funding for Language Flagship Scholarships, to provide for the Russian Flagship Program. It is extremely important that Russian Flagship students keep their profiles in the Student Certification System up-to-date! Russian Flagship students who have not completed a profile in the Student Certification System are not eligible to apply for Language Flagship Scholarships.
Funding for ROTC Language Flagship Scholarships is from the National Security Education Program (NSEP) in the U.S. Department of Defense.
