ROTC Language Flagship Scholarships

Contracted ROTC cadets who are UW-Madison Russian Flagship students in good standing are eligible for ROTC Language Flagship scholarships that fully cover the cost of participating in the following program activities:

  • Academic yearlong Russian Overseas Flagship Capstone Program at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, administered by American Councils for International Education. Awards are made in two installments, one for the fall and one for the spring semester.
  • Summer Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, administered by American Councils.
  • Intensive summer Russian language program at UW-Madison.
The amount of ROTC Flagship Scholarships for overseas study is based on the total cost of attendance for participation in those programs. The total cost of attendance, set by UW-Madison International Academic Programs, includes the program fee due to American Councils, as well as estimated additional expenses such as health insurance, local transportation, meals not covered by the program fee, and books and supplies. The total cost of attendance for the Russian Overseas Flagship and RLASP-Almaty is posted online by IAP

To apply for an ROTC Flagship Scholarship, students must submit the following materials to Laura Weigel, Russian Flagship program coordinator, by January 20, the spring semester before the student's program takes place:
  1. ROTC Language Flagship Scholarship Application
  2. A letter from the student's ROTC Unit Commander that includes the following information: student's name, field of study, type of ROTC scholarship, the semester the scholarship went into effect, and the expected length of the scholarship. 

Important: Students who have not entered a profile in the Student Certification System are not be eligible for Language Flagship scholarships. Students must keep their information in the Student Certification System up-to-date. Update your student profile in the Student Certification System now
