Introduction to Kazakhstan: Spring 2017 Tutorial for Russian Flagship Students

Russian Flagship students are invited to sign up for a pilot tutorial that will be offered in Spring 2017:

Introduction to Kazakhstan
Spring 2017 Tutorial for Russian Flagship Students

Course Author: Professor Uli Schamiloglu, Department of German, Nordic, and Slavic
Spring 2017 Tutorial Facilitator: Jambul Akkaziev, Department of History

The Russian Flagship Program, with the support of the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA), is pleased to announce a pilot tutorial in the Spring 2017 for UW-Madison Russian Flagship students preparing for overseas study in Kazakhstan. The non-credit tutorial will be offered in English, with an optional additional Russian Across the Curriculum tutorial for advanced Russian Flagship students.

The tutorial is designed to provide a broad introduction to Kazakh cultural history and contemporary life. It is based on a series of online modules on topics such as geography, history, the legacy of Kazakh nomadic culture, traditional oral literature, politics and society, Kazakh language, and contemporary Kazakh culture. The modules begin with a short video introduction by Professor Schamiloglu, followed by readings and/or video clips that will form the basis of in-person weekly discussions facilitated by Jambul Akkaziev.

The online modules were authored by UW-Madison Professor Uli Schamiloglu, a specialist in Central Asian history and Turkic linguistics, with assistance from Ainur Ainabekova and Dianna Murphy. In the Spring 2017, the tutorial will be facilitated by Jambul Akkaziev, a UW-Madison graduate student specializing in Central Asian history and an experienced Russian Flagship TA.

Students should plan to spend approximately 60 minutes per week on the online modules and 1 hour per week in the discussions sessions with Jambul.

The day/time of the discussion sessions will be set based on the schedules of participating students and the tutor.

Interested in participating in the Spring 2017 pilot of this new tutorial? Sign up here by December 15, 2016.
