Summer, Semester, and Academic Year Programs
Students who have not completed a minimum of 6 weeks of participation in an intensive overseas Russian-language program at the secondary level or above prior to admission to the Russian Flagship Program must participate in a study abroad program to be eligible to apply for the Russian Overseas Flagship Capstone Program. UW-Madison study abroad programs to Russia include summer, academic year, and semester programs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir. In summer 2015, we also began offering a program in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The programs, offered by American Councils for International Education in partnership with UW-Madison, are designed to maximize linguistic and cultural immersion, with an emphasis on the development of practical speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
UW-Madison Russian Flagship students may also fulfill the requirement for a minimum of 6 weeks of study in Russia through non-UW-Madison programs, including the following:
- The Advanced Critical Language Institute for Russian Immersion in St. Petersburg (Stony Brook University)
- Critical Languages Institute Overseas Program in Kazan and St. Petersburg (Arizona State University)
- Critical Language Scholarship Program (U.S. Department of State)
- Language and Culture Program in Kaliningrad (Mount Holyoke College)
*See also the listing of intensive Russian programs maintained by the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and Eastern European Languages (AATSEEL).
Please note: Students are not be able to use Language Flagship scholarships to support overseas study in Russia at this time.
