Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are awarded for the summer or academic year in order to assist undergraduate students in completing intensive language study with an emphasis on area studies. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Academic year fellowships are granted for full-time study at U.S. or foreign institutions; anticipated awards are $10,000 for tuition and a $5,000 subsistence allowance. Students at UW-Madison must apply directly to CREECA for awards to study Russian.

Alice D. Mortenson Undergraduate Research Award

Alice D. Mortenson Undergraduate Research Awards in Russian History are open to all UW-Madison undergraduates for research on a topic related to Russian history. Awards are given for a research project to be completed at UW-Madison, or for language study in the Russian Federation to be followed by the completion of an essay on Russian history or culture based on the use of Russian-language sources. Each year, up to three awards of $3,000 will go to deserving students.

The UW-Madison Russian Flagship is a collaborative initiative of the UW-Madison Department of Slavic Languages and Literature  and the Language Institute, with the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia, and the Doctoral Program in Second Language Acquisition
